Whats the purpose of the metal rings at the edges of the barrels, joints and especially the bell?

The wood is thin there and is under tension when the horn is assembled. The metal rings act as a clamp to prevent cracking at this weak point.

I don't think the metal ring at the bottom end of the bell serves anything but a decorative purpose (not that there's anything wrong with that). Most german/austrian clarinets don't have them.

Accidentally drop that clarinet bell on the floor and you may decide you were better off with a ring on the bell. It does help keep the wood from cracking if there is such an accident.

The ring at the bottom of the bell is largely decorative. Oh it protects from minor nicks and dings and keeps it looking nice but isn't really necessary.
The other rings provide structural support for the thin wood sections of the sockets. If these rings are too loose, the wood can crack from not enough support. If these rings are too tight, the socket can crack from too much pressure.

Drop a bell with a ring or barrel or any other part of the clarinet on the floor and you will probably crack it. The rings are not intended to protect against this type of catastrophe.

Yamaha advertises there clarinets to have a presure fitted bell ring to increase bell density for clearer sound.
