A while back I purchased a Kohlert b flat clarinet full bohem key syle. The bell logo states it was made by V.Kohlert and Sons in Graslitz Bohemia, followed by some circles with London, Chicago, and Paris stamped in them. At the bottom is Bb, LP and the serial number 243528. The body has matching LP markings. Would anyone have a suggestion for a good barrel and mouthpiece combination? Just a baseline to start with would be nice. I am looking for that symphonic full, projecting, dense, deep, lush, sound of an orchestral principle clarinetist. I don't know what i would consider myself (I made all state band, so wherever that puts me in the line). Any advice to be said about these clarinets, anything interesting?

I also have a full-Boehm Kohlert which I completely restored, and it was lacking a barrel, so I went through my coffee can full of barrels and found one that fit well and sounds fine, an older SML. I would guess that your instrument should work OK with most standard modern-type barrels. A good start might be one of the DEG aftermarket types, they seem to fit just about any clarinet (might need a thicker cork on some) and generally tune well. As for mouthpieces: regardless of the clarinet, a good mouthpiece is a good mouthpiece is a good mouthpiece.............
All that said, it's the clown with the reed in his mouth who will produce that 'dense, deep, dark, lush' sound. Wish I knew how............

Me too, Dave, I go on a "dark" search often, sometimes with a bit of success. Moeboy, my Full Boehm "stable" is now limited to 1932 Selmer R I, but I have a V Kohlert 17/6, #295,2xx, Made in CZ [I date it to "between the wars", 1920-35], yours appears to be earlier by # and showing L P plus Graslitz Bohemia, perhaps1910-20. As D S said, I had no trouble finding a suitable barrel [66 mm] with a close "bore-match" and compatible mp. As to using it in symp work, you may need a shorter barrel as pitch levels may have risen from 435 to 440 +, which might produce some intonation problems with newer woodwinds. Much luck, Don

thanks guys for the advice, so it seems that this wouldn't be a bad choice of instrument for symphonic work. By the way, the case that it came in had two black horse troop banners on it, along with culver university, so that might be of some interest. Thanks again

I almost put a bid on your Kohlert. I have an earlier LP Kohlert and an ex-Dave S. full Boehm Kohlert (a later Winnenden). Both are great players. My LP tunes perfectly in clarion with a 65mm B&H barrel. The 12th are a little wide, but if you're listening it's no problem. Your new clarinet has the potential to be a good one. Let us know how it turns out.
