 More about Penzel-Mueller
Author: Bill

In search of a fine Penzel-Mueller clarinet, I got something (!) off of eBay with the serial number 6550 (or close to that), with a Penzel-Mueller bell, but no maker's markings on either joint (or barrel). Yet, I really believe the sections all belong together. Anyway (I know the answer is "No," but I persist), does anyone know anything about P.-M. serial numbers. Does the numbering system different for each type of clarinet? Thanks!

Unfortunately, Lars Kirmser's Music Trader site hasn't got Penzel-Mueller numbers. I think I recommended that site previously (www.musictrader.com), but went back there just now and -- nada. I don't know of any source for P-M clarinet numbers. The fact that you've got a P-M mark on only one piece of the instrument doesn't necessarily mean you've got a mutt. The most important thing is that you didn't find *somebody else's* maker mark or a non-matching serial number on any of the other sections! Lots of manufacturers mark in only one place.

My Full Boehm P-M ser. # 8840, I date at mid 1920's, my first [good] teacher played it in Silent Movie !! theaters. To my slight knowledge, PM made good cl's into the 1950's under a number of trade names, Empire, Brilliante etc models, all quite good horns, recently sold one and a good friend plays one in our Comm Band [happily] . Mine [a top model, no doubt], has PM designation [with an eagle] on all 4 pieces. I'm a bit afraid you may have only a PM bell, hate to disagree, Lelia, but I've seen several PM's.

I, too, think the bell may be the only P.-M. part of this clarinet!!! I have a "Brilliante" (M 3581 B) that is permanently in the shop (I don't think my repair guys WANTS to work on it). Nick Shackleton (British scholar, contributor to "Cambr. Guide to Clarinet," and eBayer) is a P.-M. enthusiast, and owns an old catalog from P.-M. These instruments certinly have a good reputation.

I have to agree with Don, all the PMs I've seen are clearly marked on each section. I have a pair in the 7100 range each piece is marked with the PM name and eagle and a B or A for the key. They have the register vent on the side and probably date from around 1915.

I also have to agree with Don -- I've restored two Penzel-Muellers, and both had the manufacturer's name and logo on both body pieces, barrel, and bell. They are very nice instruments, as has been mentioned.
