I'm usually very much against band arrangements of significant pieces of classical/romantic repertoire. There comes a point, however, at which playing an orchestral piece for band becomes such a bad idea that the result is a fantastically cool acoustic wonder. That point is exemplified first at 3:15 in this video. Glorious. The reverberant space only adds to the magic.
I say that in all seriousness as a composer with very eccentric tastes.
Pretty decent soloist too, especially for high school.

My favorite moment was around 4:36...
But I must say, I really enjoyed the solist's playing. As a 45 year old just getting back into clarinet, I found it inspiring to listen to her.

Wow did you read the comments to the video? Pretty brutal to the band and its director, but kudos given to the soloist (and rightly so). It looks like the concert takes place in the school gym which is what my kids' high school has, unfortunately.

soloist lovely, well done to her, especially for not laughing at the band. I am not sure some of them knew why they were there. We never had chair positions at school, and I had never heard of the concept for children before I came on here, but in a band like that I do wonder if there should only be one chair. the soloist should sit in it and everyone else should stand. a long way a way.
like in the next building.
I understand having an appauling band but I don't understand her being in it, or why they are playing a piece of music clearly too hard for all but one of them.

Well, I don't think that she was the only at-least-okay player in there. She was great, in fact, but some of the other clarinetists seemed to have a clue too.
I suspect that some of the timbre issues were from the recording, but not all. And the behavior of that flute player in the white shirt should have gotten her kicked out of the band as well as a failing grade if it's a class.

A failing grade? Are you kidding? Around here you get an A just for showing up!
