I have just bought this wonderful cd,I heard him chat about it on radio 3,and would like to know if any other major work has been transposed for clarinet?Also does anyone know Michael Collins setup,he sounds beautiful!

Interesting how coincidences work. I just heard this CD on Radio Canada last Saturday and was planning to start a thread.
This CD is simply sublime. There is no word to describe the complete perfection of this clarinet adaptation of one of the very great concertos. We clarinetists all regret that Beethoven did not write us a concerto (Beethoven actually loved the clarinet).
As a reference, this a DG CD with the following ccordinates:
Michael Collins, Mikhail Pletnev (Conductor) and the Russian National Orchestra. The violin concerto is an arrangement by Pletnev himself (the orchestral part had been slightly altered to reflect the idiosynchrasis of the clarinet). Both performers deeply believe in this adaptation, and it shows in the passion and beauty of their performance. Point of interest, the version is for the A clarinet and thus adds an important work for this most beautiful of the clarinet.
I cannot wait for the day when this version of the concerto becomes available. Anybody wants to work a piano reduction out there?

Bob:
Beethoven did write a lot of chamber works for the clarinet, though, and would sometimes use it to accompany his songs along with the piano and sometimes the Cello. Beethoven, I think, simply never recieved a commission for such a concerto.

I now have the complete CD coordinates: Deutsche Grammophon 457 652-2 (Year 2000). I found several copies at HMV in Montreal, so it should be available anywhere else. BTW, this was recorded in 1997. It took 3 years for this great CD to come to the market.
In the notes included in the CD, Michael Collins described some of the changes he had to make in order to adapt the work to the clarinet (a few octave changes here and there, a few notes dropped here and there to allow the clarinetist to "breath", passing to the second violon some of the notes during passages where the solo violon is scored as "double-stopping". Essentially, it seems that the piece is 99% intact. It is a concerto in D major, so the A clarinet would play in F major as the base for the piece, a nice key indeed.
So, here my crazy plan: I will get the best violon-piano edition out there (an edition where the piano part is attractive to the pianist), I will transpose the violon part (what a great way to appropriate the piece) (anybody knows a scanning software attached to a tranposing module that could facilitate this work?), I will lift out of the CD the changes made by Pletnev/COllins (jazz musicians do this all the time), and bingo! I will have for my pleasure and enjoyment one of the most magnificient piece of music ever written.
I will let you know when this process is underway.

Mario - PianoScan or whatever (I don't remember the company name - and my "real" computer is being rebuilt right now) with Finale works well. The company that makes PianoScan makes a full score-> NIFF file converter, and Finale can import the resulting file.
