 High School Band

Hi there!
High school band was supreme, nothing could top it. My favorite memories are pep band, marching band (changing on the bus of course), jazz band, dropping my clarinet before a big band concert and breakign the mouthpiece (ouch!), and friends I made in band. Feel free to share any memories you have or if you are in high school band, why you like it.

Actually, its kind of hard to explain all the reasons i like band. Especially marching, i mean, reall, why would any sane person, spend half their summer on a field in the swweltering heat and march, execute potetially dangerous moves and learn and memorize music sometimes far beyond their level of competence? Well, I guess because of the rewards you get, but not only the trophies, titles and plaques, I guess its the reward of self satisfaction thats you get from it all, the fact that you took about 250 teenagers and turned the mess into a show that was once a sprawling circus. The feeling of acomplishment, much like that of an athlete.
And concert season, thats a whole different ballgame, you sit in a room, for us 90 minutes and play basically the same music for weeks and listen to the awful rackets nd chirps turn into a sound that you never knew was capable from a bunch of you and your buddies, then you go on and win the trophies, titles and rewards, and the feeling of self-satisfaction, that is perhaps irreplaceable. All of which are reasons whilw I'm still here coming up on my third season.
Oh and of course you learn all those lessons that are important later in life: responsiblity like being on time and being prepared, how to cooperate with people you hate, and how to work together towards a common goal.
Yep, there's plenty more that I can write about but my hands are starting to hurt!
Sara :)

I like Band for the reasons mentioned above, and because the music is often wonderful.

Sitting next to the prettiest girl (clarinet player) in high school. No luck though--she was stuck on the drum major.

I think the thing I love most about band is when I have band during lunch and I sit in the band hall with all of my friends and play games such as Skittle soccer, or just laugh about nothing (or at least that's what we told the person we were laughing about :). I really loved aiding in freshman jazz band this last year because I made lots of friends, and it was a small, but good band.

I really loved High School Band -- all of it. I didn't even mind lugging instruments back and forth. Back then I played Bass Clarinet for a while and Trombone as well. The bone was for marching and stage band. I think it was my 10th grade year I was in Concert Band, Stage Band, Pep Band, Jr. High Band Assistant, Music Theory and a study hall in the Band room. I don't recall getting much studying done that period. :-> We were too busy socializing or occasionally practicing. I was addicted to practicing though so that never suffered.

Plus, many of the things I learned in Band have helped me in life, like working hard and working with other people. I also enjoy many kinds of music.

I also remember marching around our local amusement parks --Cedar Point and Geauga Lake and then getting in free for the rest of the day! Of course, after we played, there were all of us changing on the buses. What a riot!

Hey !!
This year was amamzing. I'm only a Jr in Hs so, I still have 2 more wonderful years in band. But I love it. I love the excitement of marching band, the smiling, " ADDRESS THIS LINE", everything trying soo hard to keep in step, and the parades.. Oh, the parades. The best was the bus rides.. The wonderful games of poker, truth or dare, and just talking, Having the whole entire band singing stupid made up songs, everyone throwing their uniform in a seat then trying to sort them out correctly, running off the bus, shoes off, uniform somewhat on, plume somewhat in hand. Everyone huddling together, in the cold october wind - West point, Football games, Hostra. sharing hot chocolate, cheeks red, laughfing, finally being thankful for the wool heavy uniforms.
Concert band.. another great time.. I'll never forget my "birthday concert" - switching chairs, confusing the director.. arugring during lessons, hiding the music, playing really high notes.. A + auditions.. I am not a showoff ! .. having long conversations with my band director - everything..
Music Theory is evil, Jazz is cool - This stuff is my life, I live for it.. It makes me smile.. Literally, i would be soo bored with out band.. Music gives you such a sence of accomplishment, sence of belonging.. it's a great feeling..

Laur
