YES, I know that there's a Conn serial number list under "Equipment, How old is my...", but does that list include the serial numbers for alto clarinets? I just bought one from the auction site and I was just wondering about it. It only goes down to a low E, so I was thinking that it's an older model. I think the model number is 472. The serial number is 8346443L. What's the "L" for?

From some research I did on my Conn alto sax, which I dated to the mid 1920's, Conn used to make saxes (and presumably other instruments) to 'High pitch' and 'Low pitch'. Low pitch was A = 440Hz, I did not note what A = for High pitch. My sax is marked (among other things) 'LP'. My guess (and it is only a guess) is your 'L' means Low Pitch ie A=440Hz.
