My all-time favourite clarinettist has to be Jack Brymer. He's been the greatest influence in my own playing. He was self-taught, and we both come from the same place (north-east England). As a 13 yr old starting clarinet lessons (many years ago), this man was God!!!

About five years ago I heard a surprising young man out of the Czech Republic - David Byrda (hope I didn't butcher the spelling). He had the most fluid sound I've heard. He played with a group called Hradistan.

Michael Collins and David Shifrin are the two I normally think of. They're both very good, and Shifrin did a really good job with Copland's Clarinet Concerto.

Lynne, glad you mentioned Jack Brymer, I haven't heard him, but should! Listening much of my time on NPR classics, I've come to admire Sabine Meyer's playing [beyond her beautiful cover and interview on an earlier ICA Journal]. They are all excellent, somewhat different, and with the increasing frequency of broadcast performance of cl concertos etc, public recognition is being assured. Don

I am a Robert Marcellus fan all the way. His Mozart recording is second to none, and his style is very unique. The thing I like most about him was even though he had amazing technique, he never flaunted unless the piece of music called for it. He was a true musician.

What about Karl Liester (sorry about spelling) of the Berlin Phil. I just can't get over the fineness and beautiful fluidity he gets.

Curious - how long ago? DeFrance is way (more than 30 years) past his prime! DeFranco's good years were in the late 40s - early 60s. His playing was not up to his previous technical level by the time he got to be leader of the Glenn Miller orchestra in the mid 60s (IMO, of course!). He's 77 right now - and still playing pretty well.

Mark--FYI--The festival I referred to occurred about fifteen years ago in Fox Lake, Wi. (Bunny Berigan Memorial Festival) Buddy was obviously "out of shape" but Chuck Hedges is an awsome jazz clarineist nontheless, and could have rivaled anything the vintage DeFranco ever produced.
