I use Vandoren rue 56 reeds. Almost all are stiffer on the left ear than the right, and none are the reverse. Is there a measurable difference in the dimensions, or what.??? Fortunately, many can be balanced.

If all your reeds need balancing on the same side, there is a possibility that either your embouchure, or mouthpiece rails could be uneven.
I had a mouthpiece that required all my reeds to be thinned down on one side,
Eventually I had it refaced and problem ended, but as a temporay measure I found that placing a small piece of plastic tape on one side of the table near the barrel temporarily solved the problem.

Hello,
When I used to play VanDoren V12 and Traditional reeds, they all had to be lightened on the left side. It wasn't my mouthpiece.

for whatever reason there is apr. .002 difference just to the left side of teh heart of practically all vandoren reeds. In fact, when i get one that is not heavier on the left, i do'nt know what to do. A lot of times its better to leave the left side alone, because the flabbines of vandoren reeds prevents a lot of them from being balanced. I usual balance only the most egregious examples, and ust play on the rest.
When i copy reeds on my reedual from v12s, i have a model reed that is perfectly symetrical, and the results are better.

I remember reading on here Vandoren reeds are stiffer on the left side because the left side of the tongue supposedly tongues harder something like that, though I'm not sure.

If you aren't sure - perhaps you shouldn't guess.
Vandoren still follows the debateable notion that the left side of the reed should be made stronger to compensate for the tendency of the clarinet to twist slightly the left side from being held by the right thumb ...GBK
