Hey all... I have read the archives and heard some mixed reviews in this musical. Personal opinions aside, how is the reed 3 book specifically? Is it heavier on clarinet or tenor sax? I played in Seussical last fall that was promised to be mostly clarinet, little tenor sax and it turned out the opposite. Just want to be prepared for this one, as I'm weaker on tenor sax and will need extra practice.
Any other thoughts on the music, favorite themes, sweet clarinet parts for this show?
Thanks!
Michelle

Funny you should mention BBB. I'm rehearsing for it now.
All the books are heavy on clarinet, and the clarinet ensemble is very very important. Book 3 is very light on tenor sax, but these parts, especially when the saxes are playing together, are critical to the color of the pieces.
None of the sax parts in any of the books could be considered difficult or extensive, actually.
(IMNSHO, except for the clarinet stuff in "Shriner Ballet," this is one of the most boring musicals to play that I've ever come across.)

I've played it twice, what bmcgar says in rite! Dont remember the book #, prob. 4, on bari sax etc. Lots of the [low] Eb, G, Bb rock "stuff", make sure your hands and the bari's bottom keys are compatible, and your wind is plentiful. Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

Thanks for your responses! I'm thrilled to hear it's heavy on clarinet. I am not inept on tenor sax, but am definitely stronger on clarinet. I was hoping for the bass clarinet part as well, as that's my primary instrument but it was taken. Clarinet/tenor sax sounds fun though! We won't even get scores until mid-late September, so it's a long wait.

Hey,
I played this musical a couple years and had quite a bit of fun with it. I was playing Reed 2, but remember my friend who played Reed 3 was mostly playing clarinet. There are indeed some great clarinet parts in the show.
I loved Shriner's Ballet and the poisoned gavotte became a running joke between all the members of the orchestra.
My only advice is to have fun with it. It's cheesy... but hilarious! There's an Ed Sullivan number that had me rolling on the floor every time.. and some great lines... "He was a thief ! A thief, of love!!!!"
Good luck and tell us how it goes!
