 Louder Sound
Author: Mr Lamar

Hey all.

I started playing Bass Clarinet today and found that it is difficult to get a loud sound. It may be the reed or the instrument, but i was wondering what i should do to play louder.

Thank You!

Check with a good teacher? That will rule out any number of issues.

You might be trying to play it like a Bb clarinet. Try loosening your embouchure, too tight will cut off the sound. Try more mpc in your mouth and position it more like a saxophone than the downward angle of the soprano clarinet. Try a softer reed until you get the feel of the instrument, then try harder. A quality mouthpiece will make a lot of difference--I recommend Walter Grabners bass clarinet mpcies. I play his older BS_CX model that has been replaced by his newer Lawrie Bloom model on my Buffet Prestige low C bass and have no issues with not being appropriately "loud" if I need to be. These suggestions are offered in case you are not close to a good teacher--hope they help a bit.

Hey Mr Lamar, can you let us know what the make of the mouthpiece and the instrument is?

Eddie Palanker could give you some knowledge here. He's perhaps the best bass player in the country.

How loud were you hoping? It's not as loud as a sax, though it may look a bit like one.

I'd suggest checking out the articles on Ed Palanker's website also.

The first thing to check is your lower lip position.

Find the point where the reed and mouthpiece lay separate. Your lower teeth should be directly under that point, with about half the red part of your lower lip over your teeth.
