Plating on New horns - a question
Author: BAC

I recently purchased a Buffet R13 (Greenline). What a sweet instrument. It's clean through the entire range. I do have a concern, but let me first tell you how I treat this horn.

Prior to playing, I always wash my hands. After playing, I wipe all the keys down with an untreated cotton cloth so that all traces of fingerprints are gone.

This horn is just a couple of months old, yet I see wear on some of the rings and keys, and even wear on one bar between two posts. I fear that in a short amount of time nothing will be left! Plating is nickel by the way.

Is it normal for the plating to wear off so quickly or do you think that the manufacturing of these keys was under par? What are my options?

In my experience I've found the plating on the newer Buffet instruments to be very thin. I've got to be very careful when polishing the keys or I'll buff right through the plating in no time. I have to use a very soft polishing wheel and very little rouge. If the keys aren't really dull I'll just polish by hand with a good metal polish and let it go.

I too have a Buffet R13 with nickel keys. It's less than 6 months old and the discoloration and wear of the plating is already visable.

I'm really disappointed with the plating quality. I wonder if the Buffet silver plating is any better?

Response?

Cheers,

Paul
