re: the conversation about my "Robert" clarinet of unknown extraction......would the importer generally be an american importer? or is there a way to find out which country the importer was in? would these instruments typically be made by small scale makers in Europe who had no interest in having their name on the instrument? can anyone enlighten me?
and in the case of the stecilling protocol, would the instruments made by a particular maker commissioned by, say Buffet, by of lesser quality or value than those made by Buffet themselves? I'm thinking I need to buy a book.

Debbie, not getting any response to your questions is prob. due [as in my case] to our just not knowing the "import" workings of makers, sellers and marketers of the very competitive international music [clarinet] business. Likely, in a smaller sense, it is similar to the "farm-out", foreign, etc automotive mfgr. business. Some info, to specific questions, may result from Mark C and others searching in the Langwill index. I could not find "imports" discussed in our good books, but have not read-up in Lawson which is my most recent. Luck, Don

Very few records are available to investigate importers and stencil horns. The New Langwell index, of which our webmaster has a copy, is probably the most complete reference available. If it is not in there, the chances of finding more information are slim to none.

The truly important issues are whether it has a good tone quality and is in-tune when played with a good setup (appropriate mouthpiece and reed). Of course it is also important that it is well built and that you maintain it properly.
