My 13 year old son who has been playing for 4 years is ready to upgrade his mouthpiece. He has done very well with the Hite Premier but I'd like to get him a pro grade mouthpiece.
His current setup is a Vandoren V12 #3 with a Luyben ligature. Can anyone recommend a logical step up from the Premier. A slightly more closed facing might be good but I don't want to force him to use a stronger reed. What would be another good alternative for use with a V12 #3.
Thanks,
Steve

Steve, if he has progressed beyond his current mouthpiece, chances are he is taking private lessons. Am I right on this?
If so, I would think that his instructor would be a better person to query, as that individual will be better acquainted with your son's playing characteristics and be able to offer more on-target suggestions.
In any case, recommendations from us would only be able to point you in a general direction. My daughter and her teacher (a well-respected player with a major symphony) spent a number of weeks trying out a number of different mouthpieces until they found the one that worked best for her. She had been studying with him for over a year, too. We have no personal knowledge of your son or his playing and/or abilities. It would be very difficult to make blanket reccomendations.
