B45 v. 5RVLyre
Author: Frank

Anyone have a comparison between the Vandoren B45 and the 5RVLyre? Just interested to see how the two compare.

Thanks,
Frank

P.S. Any NOT using Vandoren reeds on a Vandoren mp? Interested to know what the set-up is if you're not.
:-)

I've gone through 4 mp's in one year to get to the set-up I'm on now. It's unbelievable! The first one was a custom made by my teacher, a M13, a Greg Smith 1*, and finally a Greg Smith 1.

My set up with the Greg Smith 1 is a BG Super Revelation and V12 3 1/2. I play on an R13 with a Chadash barrel.

Please note not to use my set-up as a basis for yours. It might not be right for you. Always be open to try various mp's to find the one that suits you. It took me a long time(11 years) to find mine. :)

Good luck!

Dittos to set-up by Kim. This is exactly what I play on. I used to play on a Vandoren 5RVLyre13 mouthpiece. I've also played on a B45. But, the results I get with the Greg Smith mouthpiece are fantastic. It may not work for everyone, but the extra money spent on a premium hand crafted mouthpiece is well worth it to some.

I use both Vandoren and Mitchell Lurie reeds on my Vandoren mouthpieces.

I'm just a high school student playing for fun, would a Greg Smith mouthpiece be a sound investment? If so how much would it improme my tone, I use the same lig. and reeds but with a B45. How much would, it, I guess the Greg 1 mouthpiece cost?
Sara :)

Sara, Gregory is a sponsor of Sneezy.Org and has a Web site at http://www.gregory-smith.com. I believe his prices are there.

As to whether or not it's worth it and how much it improves your tone - only you can decide. Send him an email and talk to him.

The Greg 1 improved my tone tremendously! However, you will have to try all three of his facings to see for yourself! :)

What was the original question??

The original question was comparing the B45 vs the 5RVLyre. Been there, done that on Mitchell Lurie, Vandoren, Vandoren V-12, Legere, Fibracell reeds as an adult novice.

Both are good mouthpieces for the novice to intermediate clarinet player. The 5RVLyre was my first third party brand mouthpiece. It's a medium to slightly close design that typically is easy to produce a controlled air stream with soft to semisoft reeds (Vandoren 2, 2.5, 3.0 range). The tone production is good, just a little bright, but quite managable. The B45 is also a great mouthpiece for the novice to intermediate player. It's a medium to slightly open design, producing a little darker sound and also works very well with soft to semisoft reeds. It's a little bit easier to blow air through but a little more difficult to control from the novice perspective. With frequent practice sessions, most of these issues will become moot. I personally found that both of these mass produced mouthpieces required expert rework to plane down the defective high spots on the rails to get the reed to match up and properly seal. Once this work was done, many of the performance problems disappeared.

Now that the question has been answered, I can drift off subject. I purchased a custom made professional grade Borbeck 13 mouthpiece recently. It certainly isn't cheap, but it's worth every penny. Overall performance is similar to the B45, because the general medium to slightly open design is similar. However, because my Borbeck 13 was custom made just for me from premium stock, its performance is absolutely fantastic. Great tone, much easier control, a real joy to play. Even my soft Legere reeds sounded much more woody on this mouthpiece.
