For those of you who have played Molly on the Shore, how did you play the triplets? On recordings I listen to it sounds like they don't play the triplet correctly. I got a recording from Hal Leonard and they seem to play two 16ths and an 8th instead of triplets. I was just wondering because my director doesn't know what to do with this because we've played the other way(not triplets) and it sounds better and we cant play it differently now.

I've always heard it played, and have played it the way you described it.
But thinking about it with triplets instead, it feels like it's dragging.

I just finished listening to about 10 different recordings and the majority use triplets. Some use both. They start with the two 16th, 8th pattern and switch to triplets when the bassoons or low strings come in. Grainger himself played triplets (and at a much faster tempo than any band or orch recording.)

It is ok to interpret things like that to your suiting. If your band director doesn't think it sounds good with the triplets, do it the way you've been doing it. But, the triplets would sound good if played at a good pace (as mentioned by hinotehud above.

My teacher would say that it is up to me what I do between pulses, but insists that I keep the beat. So, the 1/8th + 1-1/16ths would be ok with him --but he might offer an alternative interpretation of his own.
