 Excess saliva
Author: TomD

I am 52 and for the past couple of years, I seem to have excess saliva which is really annoying when I am playing. Docs and Dentist don't have any explanation. Any thoughts?

Hi Tom,

Just a thought, it might be something in your diet. I have only been playing 3 years, I am 59, and I had quite a problem with saliva. I don't eat much dairy now (or anything that produces excess saliva) and I wait a few hours after eating anything to play. I remove as much saliva that I can (slurp:-) before I start any song. I also keep a small hand towel handy. If it was good enough for Louie it's good enough for me!

Good luck,

....Jim

I agree that diet can be the culprit. Also, I've noticed that brushing my teeth too soon before I play does this. Toothpaste seems to increase sliva flow, which is good in terms of cleaning teeth. I suggest a good hour between brushing and playing and if that isn't possible, brush with only water.

1. Collect it in the space that presumably exists behind the lower front teeth, under the tongue, and swallow it when next able.

2. Keep the head vertical, so that this reservoir does not pour to the embouchure area.

3. Suck on the mouthpiece after rests, to remove any saliva between the reed and mouthpiece.
