 New Chadash barrels
Author: Aussie Nick

I have some new chadash barrels on apprival. Of the two Bb 66mm barrels I have, the one I chose has a very rough finish in the bore. The one I didn't like as much is smooth inside. I was wondering what is the reason for this and is there anything wrong with the one that is rough inside?

Perhaps roughness is not ideal, however, what matters most are the intonation and playing characteristics. Be sure the that the throat notes (Bb, A, Ab) are acceptable to your tuner. Because of the severe reverse taper, these notes tend to be very high.

I had one that made my clarinet into a sonic cannon (which is GOOD). Sadly, the intonation made me put it down.

That's why it's always important to consider the mthpc/barrel relationship. It depends on the chamber and bore of the mouthpiece many times (not to mention secondarily, the clarinet itself).

With a different style mthpc and that same barrel, the throats will be good if not a little low in the lower throats (corresponding to a pitch that is right on in the upper clarion). Some have to even use a 1mm shorter barrel because they have been voicing down the throats for such a long time.

I find that the Buffet/Chadash or Moennig reverse taper actually brings the twelfths closer together. That was it's original intention when Moennig started this practice when he made mine and my teacher and his teacher's barrels from scratch. Buffet copied that idea from Moennig.

Of course that was back in the days when the twelfths were, generally speaking, further apart on a majority of instruments.

Dear Greg,

Thank you for pointing out my omission on that last post. I should have said "...very very high for me." I am aware of the voicing issue, I have since that very trial switched to a Yamaha CSG (and refuse to look back!!) which uses a proprietary barrel of between 54 and 56 and a half millemeters in length.

I don't think even Chadash could squeeze much of a taper in there!!

Re: intonation and the Chadash barrel

My husband has been experimenting with setups. Yesterday for the first time he used a Chadash barrel with the Fobes SF mouthpiece (plus #4 Rue Lepic reed and Spriggs ligature) on the R-13. It was SO GOOD I actually came running from the other room to see what it was that he was doing.

He's always had decent tone, but this was just spectacular -- pure, big, balanced, right-through-the-center-of-the-note sound. And it was stable -- comparable tone all the way up and down the range.

I have always been skeptical about the influence of this or that piece of gear (not that it ever stopped me from trying anything :)), but as of yesteray, I am a believer!

I am still making up my mind...but I think the barrel has improved the evenness of sound between the registers. It has definitely narrowed some 12ths, and has raised a couple of throat tones which needed raising... except the throat Bb and A are a little high now but I can easily have this adjusted. As for the barrels I'm trying with my A....I'm less certain about this - admitedly I haven't spent as much time with these ones yet. I have to be very careful with my A because the high (thumb) C tends to be on the flat side as is the throat F...probably something to do with Buffet putting in register tubes that are too long.

I found exactly the same thing as Nick - two new chadash barrels (A65mm) one smooth and one rough. Its the rough one that seems to work better on my R13A narrowing the 12th etc - I found this counterintuitive. Unfortunately it also changes the sound quality in a way that my orchestral colleagues don't like - less focussed (I am told) so I still use my 'stock' barrel most of the time.

I found chadash barrel on the Bb R13 gave little or no benefit compared to my standard barrel. (I use B4013 m/p)

This just goes to show how difficult it is to generalise these things becuase it also depends on your set up and playing style.

It also my be determined by how many barrels one auditions as they are by nature inconsistent - regardless of the nature of the burr on the inside of the bore. I don't think any statistical analysis would illuminate whether a mirrored smooth surface or a slightly raised burr would yield any perceived superiority.

As the well worn joke goes, "How many clarinetists does it take to change a light bulb? 101. One to screw in the bulb and 99 to find the perfect light bulb."

And one to say that the other 100 are completely off base ...

I thought I might mention that Zinner is now making clarinet barrels. I ordered a small batch and found them to be extremely promising. The finishing was as good as anything I have seen to date.

I play ringless Chadash barrels on my R13's with a Greg Smith 1+ mouthpiece or an exceptional Vandoren M13 Lyre(exceptional only because I tried 15 before I found it) and have found them to work very well for me. Intonation is great and they provide a lovely focus and projection to my sound. My barrels all have smooth surface on the inside and I could not be happier with them. I've seen some pictures of the new Zinner Barrels and I think they are quite ugly looking but if they play well then I guess they will stick around. I'm not realy sure why Mr. Grabner mentioned those on a post about Chadash barrels.....do they have a similar taper?

Aussie Nick,
Your problem on your A clarinet might have to do with a tone hole needing some undercutting. If both F and high C are flat than you could have the index finger tone hole looked at....some undercutting on this hole could raise both pitches to a more comfortable range.
