Does anyone know what kind of clarinet/setup Neidech is using? Just curious.

Thanx!

I have heard Neidich play live, and can only describe him--with his multiple articulative circular breathing skills--as techqnically UNSTOPPABLE (even as he discribes his fingers "flopping all over the place--I don't worry about it")

However, a short story....... Last evening, I tuned into to a clarinetist, playing on NPR, with piano accompaniment. I was trying to guess "who" it could be. It sounded as if the performers reed was much too stiff, causing a forced, "thick" quality of sound Nor was the phrasing particulariy musically enjoyable--just play'n the notes. Amature or "pro"?? Lots of names came to mind--Stoltzman, for one--but to make a long story short, the clarinetist was Charles Neidich. I can only describe the musical phrasing of this performance (recording??) as average and his tone quality as "not good". Much too "German" for my ears.

Personally, although it is always interesting to know what the "pros" use for equipement, I would never want to duplicate his personal set-up to acheive a sound like his. But regarding his technique, perfection would be an understatement.

Thanx GBK!

Yea, I also agree Neidich's sound is not something I'm exactly yearning for. But I think he is an absolutely amazing clarinetist and musician. In terms of technical playing I don't think I have heard anyone match his efortless and incredible technique.

GBK wrote, "In terms of technical playing I don't think I have heard anyone match his efortless and incredible technique." And I absolutely agree--as I said, he is (technically) UNSTOPPABLE.

Joan Towers wrote her Clarinet Concerto for Charles Neidich who told her during a planning session, "You know, I can play anything. There is nothing you need be afraid to write." 'nuff said..................

I admire Charles Neidich, but choose to pursuit a different quality of sound.

William -

The quote you attributed to me was not by me, but by kev182.

Charles Neidich is a MAJOR clarinet artist and relevant discussion is encouraged.

The thread stays open [wink] ...GBK

Without getting into a major diatribe on this subject...

I think and feel Charles Neidich to be among the very finest players alive at the moment..

not only has proven to be a superb original instrument exponent he plays the modern instrument equally with a subtle control far beyond imagination.

He is also (putting it mildly) a fine teacher of the highest integrity and brings to his performance far more knowledge about the nuts and bolts of performing the clarinet effectively than any other soloist now living in North America.

His superb recordings of the Mozart clarinet concerto and Weber Concertos occupy a very high standing among clarinet players as well.

I will always be among the legions of this fantastic musician's fans

Peter -

He teaches at Mannes. http://www.mannes.edu/college/studying_at_mannes/college_programs/biography.jsp?b=14817.

I'm reasonably sure he would be available for single lessons.
