 Nielsen fingering problem...
Author: Danny Boy

I'm preparing to do th Nielsen concerto with orchestra, and last time I did this passage didn't go according to plan...I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

10 bars before figure 36 there's a nasty passage that goes C, Eb, Bb, Eb (top of the clarion, in to the altissimo) twice in semiquavers.

As we're going at a hell of a lick by this time, I was wondering if anyone has any advice to help with this passage. At present I'm fingering each note out, and can't consistently pitch the Ebs.

You could try using an overblown throat G#. This eliminates the second break between the clarion and the altissimo, and using the harmonic fingerings makes these sorts of technical passages so much easier. The only trouble is sometimes they sound flat. It's different for everyone.
Good luck!

Christopher...that's a great suggestion, thank you. I'd already tried the A key, which was ultra-fiddly.

None of the 'fake' fingerings involving the a/g sharp/register keys are too bad on my Tosca.

You can leave the side key for Bb down to keep the fake Eb higher. I usually vent this Eb with the last two sidekeys but in this instance it loses its practical component.

You could also use 1 and 1 for the Bb's

Great fingering suggestions ... as much as I adore Nielsen's symphonies, his clarinet concerto leaves me cold. Probably because I played viola in an orchestra once and his string writting is just plain difficult (though nothing like the difficulty of the solo, I know).

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

diz - Nielsen was an orchestral violinist, so presumably he knew what was playable. Maybe he had a special grudge against viola players.

If there are so many people on this board unwilling or unable to have a civil and balanced discussion about important issues, then I shan't bother to post here any more.

To the great relief of many of you, no doubt.
