As you might know, I'm renting a Vito as I begin. Though walking through an "antique" shop with a friend, spotted a Noblet clarinet for $100. My friend, who plays other reed instruments, showed that there were no cracks but another customer thought it would require re-padding (?). Is this a good investment. What would new 1) pads and 2) corks roughly cost? And is this a good investment?

In general, Noblets were better than Vitos. I have one Vito and two Noblets and the Noblets are better -- but my Noblets are metal clarinets.
The cost of an overhaul will vary with are and how much needs to be done. I think the minimum will be $75 and the max will be $200 (unless you were going to replate keys.) $300 total would still be a good price. Naturally, it would be best if you could leave a deposit and get a tech to give you an assessment and an estimate.

For three or four hundred dollars you'll be able to find a decent intermediate horn . I'm not sure you'd ever see an investment return dumping that much into a beginner horn.

If you brought it to your local music store, it'd probably cost around $100. The Noblet is a fine instrument(I have one myself that I just had overhauled), but you probably will want an overhaul.

The wooden Leblanc Noblets are fine INTERMEDIATE instruments. Only the metal ones (I think) are beginners.
