In the last week I've had discussions with police departments and bank managers about this. Those of us who haven't yet experienced this should be aware of our personal legal liability in these issues.
In short: I posted an ad for a music book here in the Classifieds and a person e-mailed his intent to buy it. We agreed upon a price, including postage overseas, of $21. US. However the cheque arrived for $6,000. US. Because of seeing the warnings given on this BB I knew right away it was bogus. I contacted my local police department - they told me that they didn't have jurisdiction BUT if I cashed the cheque then they would be interested in ME! Internet research, correspondence and phone calls revealed that the bank account number was valid but the cheque was forged. This is now in the hands of the fraud unit of the London police department. At this moment they're tracing the location of the person through his e-mail address and through the street address he sent me.
So if this cheque were cashed, I would be in legal problems because of participating in theft and/or money laundering since there were actually funds behind the cheque. This has been a good reminder! But thanks to this BB the scam didn't hurt anyone on this side of the Atlantic, except that the rightful owner of the bank account had to close his account.

Brenda,
These scam emails are sent out in their millions, but if they're trying the old trick of sending more than you need and thus expecting a huge refund for $21, then they must be getting desperate.
I doubt if they'll trace the IP since these people probably use a proxy server or internet cafe.
The address may be a communal/student house or student apartment - plentiful in London - and impossible to know exactly who is the originator of the scam.
I've had my fair share. Now I only take Paypal. Other methods are fine as long as they don't mind waiting till I get written confirmation from the bank.

"Now I only take Paypal."
Me too, unless I personally know the person.
My attitude is "If you're legit and you're going to participate here you will have a PayPal account."

Ugh - if someone mailed me a cheque at all my alarm bells would go off in no time. When you try here to pay something with a cheque you might as well try to pay with home-printed money.
Last time I've used cheques was thirty years ago and those were travellers' cheques.

tictactux,
Re: "When you try here to pay something with a cheque you might as well try to pay with home-printed money." Very funny... thanks for my laugh du jour!
In another thread, GBK asked about what kind of "bang for the buck" we are getting. I think it was in reference to equipment, but IMO this BB is the best bargain anywhere for clarinet players.
Regards,
Hans

I'm legit and I don't have a PayPal account. Dropped it due to their excessive fees.

Hey Bob D..."Now I only take PayPal". For me, Bob I will never again deal with PayPal. I ordered a camera from a site on eBay--buy it now-- and filled in all the stuff. They told the seller my address was not verified , although they had both my bank account numbers and my credit card numbers and had dealt with me for three years.
The seller refused to ship to an "unverified" address. I contacted them and gave them my VISA over the phone they agreed to ship and did.
PayPal had charged my VISA and then when the shipment was denied put the money back--not in my VISA account but in my PayPal account. Took me a week to find that out and another week to get it out of there and into my own bank account. Needless to say I cancelled my account You may deal with PayPal all you wish, but I never will again.

Hey Bob A......My comment was in reference to clarinets. But there's outfits I won't deal with either, that's the way it goes.
