 Differing set ups

I have recently had the experience of having to perform on two reasonably different set ups. My Bb was in the process of having some repairs. Luckily I have a friend who doesn’t play much any more, she kindly lent me her Selmer Recital. The difference in sound surprised me. My Bb is a Buffet RC Prestige, which I play with a B45 Vandoren mouthpiece series 13. This to me sounds “darker” than the Selmer Recital (played with a standard B45 mouth piece-for tuning reasons), which is advertised as having a “dark” sound. The Selmer seemed to have easier, clearer articulation however I preferred the Buffet’s tone and felt more secure with intonation. Interestingly in an orchestral rehearsal, where I had both instruments side by side some of the players (non clarinet) expressed a preference for the Selmer. At this rehearsal I still played my RC Prestige A Clarinet. It felt odd playing with instruments of such differing sounds and feel.

Do any other players use differing set ups with their A and Bb instruments.

I used to play on a Bb Buffet Prestige and an A Leblanc Concerto. I found it took a short time to get used to the switch due to the different feel of the keys. But, if you use the two enough, you are mentally ready to pick up and play after a while of practicing with them. After the first month I didn't have a problem. Had I purchased the Concerto first, I could have afforded a matching Bb Concerto--however, the Bb Prestige was purchased first and I couldn't afford a matching A Prestige.

I play two older (1956 and 1961) Buffet R13 Bb's and a
1993 Leblanc Concerto A, and I have not had any trouble
at all with switching between them. I might have trouble
switching from a RC Prestige to a Recital; but I wouldn't
know because I have never played either of those models.

I find that switching from one brand of Bb to another
is more of an issue (for ME).
