 Buffet S 1
Author: Ted

Any body ever hear of the Buffet S 1? I seem to remember them but can't recall any facts clearly. Were they a B-13 upgrade or a cheaper horn? Any input would help. Thanks

The S1 Buffet was designed as an alternative to the R13. It has a different bore. It was pretty much a flop in the US. It was discontinued after a few years.

I've played a few S1 Buffets, and they are usually harder to blow than R13s. Plus they can be stuffy. But if you like a lot of resistence and have a powerful air stream, you might sound good on it.

Oddly enough, the Buffet S1 saxophones were quite popular and still sell quite well on the auction sites.

I did check the big auction site just now after reading your post and saw a seller claimed the S1 was an improvement to the R13. That is not true. They retailed at the same price, but most people strongly preferred the R13s.

I have a Buffet that was made for the European Mkrt. Its an S.D. and may be similar to the S1 the way I have heard it discribed. I believe it is a harder blowing instrument and is more like a Jazz instrument than the R13 with slightly higher pitch. It is harder to blow but with the right player I also think it can be a great sounding instrument. Jus my thghts.

Disliked the one I tried, and believe it to be different to the S.D. UK dealers tell me that the S1 had a reputation for endemic intonation problems. The extra resistance reminds me a bit of a Selmer 9 Star.

I had one new in the 70's, It got a great sound, and was projecting; though not even thru the registers and yes; a bit tubby. I did well on it thru college. Each instrument is very different. Used ones are around. Definately play test them first.
