Hi
I'm buying some (a lot of) CDs as a Pesach present for myself and my family will contribute. I already decided on some more modern jazz clarinet CDs (to add to my already too big collection of modern jazz clarinet collection). I'm also going to buy some classical clarinet CDs for a change, since I have very few of those. I basically have classical CDs only from Sharon Kam, Robert Spring, Karl Leister (Mozart concerto), Emma Johnson (English music), Giora Feidman, Frank Cohen (Soldier's Tale), Ashkenazy (Stravinsky music), and maybe a couple of other less famous ones. I know classical clarinet music mostly from the years I used to play it and from going to concerts. Not much from CDs at all.
I am interested in CDs by some of the players mentioned often on this forum, like the American players which I've never heard before Jon Mannese, Ricardo Morales, Marcellus, Richard Stoltzman and also from players like Sabine Meyer, Paul Meyer, Anthony Pay, Wolfgang Meyer, Michel Portal, Harold Right, Jack Brymer, Gui Deplus, or any top player really (any more good French ones I don't know about? Since most of what I listen to I French clarinetists).
I already decided on the Benny Goodman CD with Copland concerto. I prefer not to have overlapping pieces on the CDs, unless the performer is really the best on a particular CD. Price is also a consideration, but less than quality. Also I would really want an excellent recording of both the Mozart and Brahms quintets. Other pieces I would like to have a good recording of are the Debussy Raphsodie, Arnold Sonatina, Messian quartet (End Of Time I think it is called), Poulenc Sonata and clarinet duet, but I don't restrict myself to anything (except I'm not interested in buying anything b y Webber).
Also, I understand there is a link to Amazon (that's where I'm ordering from) from here that will let the board benefit some. Where is it?
Thank you to anyone that helps!

I'll restrict this post to the just some players you mentioned, and a few suggestions:
Jon Manasse:
I know said you didn't want anything by Weber, but the complete works for clarinet are not only his best recordings, but in my opinion, they are the best out there. If you're looking for more, his "Jon Manasse Plays Music from 3 Centuries" epitomizes fantastic tone and offers a great concerto, the Concerto for Clarinet and Strings by James Cohn
Ricardo Morales:
His French Portraits CD is available somewhere from Boston Records. Some of the best renditions of all the standard French stuff you see on CDs like this, minus the Debussy Premiere Rhapsody.
Robert Marcellus:
One of the only commercially available CDs is his recording of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Cleveland Orchestra and George Szell. You can probably find this cheap on Essential Classics.
Harold Wright:
Look up the pieces on the CDs "Recital No. 3," "Clarinet Concert 4," and "Clarinet Concert 5." In my opinion, these are the best of his output available on CD right now. They are also by Boston Records.
Also, if you haven't heard these European clarinetists, you need to:
Alessandro Carbonare: His CD of the Mozart and Brahms quintets is as good as it gets. It's available from Amazon, I believe.
Martin Frost: I recently discovered this unbelievable player. His CD of the Brahms Sonatas and Brahms Trio is available from Van Cott Information Services, as well as his other recordings.
Wow, you're in for a good time no matter what.

Check out Michael Collins. Great recording of the Malcolm Arnold Sonatina (on a CD of the Nash Ensemble playing a bunch of different Malcolm Arnold stuff). He also has a great recording of John Adams' Gnarly Buttons.
Thea King has a great CD of concerti by Arnold, Britten, Maconchy.
Check out Gary Gray's recording of the Copland, Lutoslawski Dance Preludes, Rossini, Arnold #1
Stanley Drucker plays a fantastic Corigliano

I'm looking for a recording of William O. Smith's "Jazz Set" for clarinet. The only one I've found is through the publisher on LP. Not that I don't like the format, it is the convienence of listening to it whenever I want to, plus waiting for my money to be mailed to the publisher and them mailing the LP back to me. Thanks!!

OK I'm starting to get to my final list.
The only Sabine Meyer they have in stock is this
This one ... please use the URL= syntax for these very long URLS - Mark C.
Should I get it?
Also, I still haven't found a CD with the Poulenc clarinet duet. The versions I heard so far are the one by the Meyers and the one by Portal and Meyer, and I remember liking some movement better in each version, but I think both CDs are full of Poulenc music not necessarily clarinet music. I prefer a CD with only clarinet music that will include it.
The more I search the harder the decision gets since there are so many good CDs....

My clarinet teacher lent me a CD by Jon Manasse called "Manasse Plays Three Clarinet Concertos." It's gorgeous. Manasse performs the Mozart, Nielson and Copland concertos beautifully.
I second someone's recomendation of Stozman's rendition of the Copland concerto.
I have a CD by Karin Dornbusch called "Clarinet" on which she plays several modern works for clarinet like Stravinsky's Three Pieces, Bernstein's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano and pieces by Alban Berg, Bohuslav Martinu and Steve Reich. Reich's "New York Counterpoint for 11 Clarinets" is pretty cool.

Paul Meyer:

20th century music for unaccompanied clarinet
Alain Damiens:
American Contemporary Clarinet
Guy Deplus:
Messian's quatuor pour la fin des temps
Michel Arrignon:
Saint Saens Carnival of the Animals (Entremont conducting)
Recordings of Stravinsky Ebony Concerto with boulez conducting

I would opt for the earlier recording of Meyer's here -
Here it is - PLEASE use the URL syntax shown in the Help section for long URLs
the one you have found is a bit of an accquired taste as she takes the middle mvt quite faster than you are probably used to hearing it, although the last mvt bolts along aswell it is stunningly played. (but that's meyer for you!)
on my chosen recording is Stamitz concerto no 10 which is really brilliantly played & also weber concerto no 1 & the mozart serenade no 10 "Grand partita". So its good value too.
It's a personal thing isn't it? you'll have to make up your own mind of course, as everyone here will have their own opinion. But this rendition of the KV 622 is a pretty good starting point I promise you!
enjoy!!

I have just noticed that on the Amazon.com site the cd I recommended is incorrectly advertised - it says that 'on this cd' is the Stamitz clarinet & Bassoon concerto - in fact it is Stamitz concerto no 10...honest, I'm listening to it right now!

I would recommend the Jazz Chamber Trio (Paquito D'Rivera). It's mostly his clarinet playing, and a little bit on sax as well. The CD from him titled "The Clarinetist" I enjoy a lot also. The best way I can describe it is as a cross-over album. Kinda like how Faith Hill and Shania Twain are not quite all country, but not quite all rock. The Clarinetist is not quite jazz, but not quite orchestral.
Also, the CD called Stanley Drucker, Principal Clarinet, New York Philharmonic
. I think his playing on these are very nice. A lot of good energy put into them. (I prefer this recording of poulencs sonatas to any others that I've heard, as well as his Debussy)

Gobboboy the CD I showed is the only one they had in stock, so I didn't go for a Sabine Meyer CD this time.
I ordered the Alessandro Carbonare CD with the Mozart and Brahms clarinet quintets, the Paul Meyer French Clarinet Art CD, Stanley Drucker (the one Alexi recommended), Richard Stoltzman (the one recommended with the concertos), and of course Benny Goodman Collector's Edition.
From all versions of the Massiaen quartet they had on amazon, the Boeykens was the best imo so I ordered it.
I also ordered a CD by Boeykens with Stravinski 3 pieces, Soldier's Tale, and Bartok Contrasts.
Other classical CDs I ordered not mentioned in this thread are Jervase de Peyer English Music For Clarinet & Piano, which sounded very interesting and he has a very unique sound, and also a version of Prokofiev Hebrew Themes with one of my favorite musicians - Michel Portal.
As I thought would happen, I found too many modern/avantgarde/free jazz CDs which I wanted, so had to get a few less classical ones.
Thanks very much everybody.
