Now that's a leading question ... where exactly are you?

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Ian Gordon in Ormond, Melbourne, or Tony Ward in Christie's Beach, SA. I believe he's retired now. I just got my A back from Ian on Friday morning and he always does a top job.
Am I allowed to post a phone number for a store here, Mark C?

I too am interested in knowing where you are. In northern Sydney I suggest Tom Sparkes. He's one of those craftsmen who make you hope he has many apprentices to carry on the work.

I will second Ian Gordon in Melbourne, he is great and a real pleasure to work with. He works mainly out of Brass and Woodwind in Ormond. I don't know the other guys there, but Ian's work is great. In Sydney, Steve Giordano does some great work, and is real value for money while Diane Gardiner is also really reliable. She used to be based out on the Pacific Highway about a 20 minute train ride north of the city. Hope that helps.

If someone would fly me to Oz, I'd repair the bass clarinet for FREE! Such a deal..........

Dave, I'd do it but I don't have either the ready OR a bass clarinet.

Also well thought of in Melbourne is Paul Donnelly on (613) 9579 1205.

Thanks so much for all the replies!
Sorry I should have said I'm in Brisbane but probably well worth the postage to send elsewhere to someone with a good reference!
It's a tough ask to trust your bass to anyone, and I'm yet to find anyone who has enough experience with them to really get down to the fine tuning (not an awful lot of Buffet basses around here I suppose!)

Would definitely fly you over if I had the money David...... actually maybe I'd go the other way and have a holiday!
any phone numbers and advice on whether posting is worthwhile (will it get bumped around too much?) would be appreciated!

There's a fellow named Graham Thomas in Brisbane who's playing a bass clarinet he obtained from me; I believe he's at the University there -- he might know a good local repairman.

zigznzagzl ... just speak with Brian Catchlove or Nicolas Murphy in the Queensland Orchestra and see who they recommend, they're the experts in your area.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Try John Stephenson. He's very organised and really knows his way round the mechanism. Quite busy generally which is usually a good sign!

Or perhaps the newish Woodwind and Brass Brisbane Store on Enoggera Tce.

I believe most of the people who worked at For Winds (while it still existed) are now there.

Are you studying in Brisbane?

Brass and Woodwind:
Melbourne 03 9578 3677
Brisbane 07 3367 8776

Call the Melbourne store and say you want your bass looked at/overhauled/whatever, and arrange to drop it off at the Brisbane store. They'll organise to have it sent to Melbourne and back to Bris, and you just pick it up from Brisbane.

I think...
