I woke up this morning with my TV tuned to the Classic Arts Showcase cable channel; they were playing a 1981 video of Benny Goodman playing a couple of tunes with a quartet in Copenhagen, Dennmark. I know the subject of BG has been bruited about in this forum many times, both pro and con, but this morning I was moved by the freshness of his musical expression (even some 40 years after his heyday), the limpidity of his tone, and his masterful technique. Sometimes it is very theraputic to revisit these old places!

That performance is available in a CD/DVD set. I think it's called "Farewell" or "Goodbye". I bought mine from Tower Records. There's some very nice stuff on that performance, and some kinda oddball stuff as well. Good collection. I just wish that the Copenhagen concert from 1973 was available on video!

I'm glad to hear that you have a renewed appreciation of Benny Goodman's artistry. He is my favorite jazz clarinetist of all time, for reasons I can't quite define. His sound was -- and still is, I think -- unique in swing music.
My favorite BG album is "Together Again;" recorded in 1964, wherein he plays with with his original BG Quartet (Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, and Teddy Wilson). The musicianship of all these guys is simply incredible. Benny's solo on "Runnin' Wild" is especially inspiring!
