I nee a way to relieve the pressure on my right thumb. i have developed severe arthritis, and pushing the clarinet up with my thumb is excriciatingly painful. I saw a web site advertising Pan supports, which use a harness and support stick to hold the clarinet in place without using the thumb. Has anyone had experience with this or other support to alleviate the pressure on the right thumb?

You may want to expore the FHRED <www.quodlibet.com>.
It will completely take the weight of the clarinet from your hands or can be tilted to allow partial weight and eventually full weight when you can handle it.
It's extremely compact and fits in most cases. Looks like fishing pole stick, but it's very secure. It sits on a chair and fits on your thumbrest.
The student one is a bit short if you're tall (I'm 6'1)... I used the student one to get used to a wooden instrument by using on my leg and then once I got used to the weight simply stopped using it.
The student one is the only one that works on a clarinet that lacks a ring on the thumbrest. You'd have to get a ringed thumbrest to use the taller professional models.
Best of luck,
Stephen

I've used a neckstrap for years and that solved my problem.
