does anyone know where I can find, or have any information about what kind of clarinet heinrich baermann would have played in the 1800's? I need it for a major assignment, anything would be much appreciated:)

I think he played the 13 keys clarinet from Ivan Müller.

I believe that "alphie" on this bb, a very knowledgeble orchestral musician, put up a great treatise on the baermann-muhlfield-brahms, etc clarinet...search under his name, and other key words, above...

Pamela Weston's book: "Clarinet Virtuosi of the Past" may well have this information, and perhaps some photographs (can't be sure as I seem to have lost my copy). I'm not sure if it's still in print.

Gary Van Cott, a sneezy sponsor, carries the Weston books (and a lot of other good stuff, as well). Check out his site at http://www.vcisinc.com/.

I know that the New Grove Dictonary of Music and Musicians has a fair amount of information on him, especially the new edition. The Weston has some stuff too.

Jolynne -

The place to start is Anthony Baines, Woodwind Instruments and Their History. It's about $11.00 at Amazon. Order through Sneezy so that Mark gets the rebate. It's a great resource and will probably tell you all you need to know. If you don't want to buy it, your school library is 100% certain to have a copy.

Good luck.

The Weston book IS still in print :-) I got my copy last month straight from the publisher. If you cannot find it over there, the publisher is Fentone Music Limited, Fleming Road, Earlstrees, Corby, Northands NN17 4SN.

I believe F. Geoffrey Rendall discusses this in his book "The Clarinet".
