 More ?'s about Legere reeds

I just received my Legere #2.5 for my bass clarinet and have only used it for about 1/2 hour so far. I really like it except when play above high G it is hard to get the notes out. Is 2.5 too soft? At the same time I ordered Vandoren #3 and they seem to be too hard. I get a muffled sound with them, like someone stuffed a rag in my bass clarinet. I am thinking about ordering a Legere #3, I like the sound I get with the Legere and most of the concerts our community band plays in our outside so I think the Legere would work out well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Two points to cover two different reeds.

The Legere reeds tend to get a bit soft after they warm up. My Legere 2.5 soprano reeds seem a bit weak for the altissimo, too. Legere 3.0 reeds may perform better for you with the high notes. Legere reeds should not be doctored up. Technically, you could do it, but you would void the Legere warranty if you did it.

Vandoren natural cane reeds can be doctored up a bit, with some careful sanding, using ultra fine 1200 grit wetted wet/dry sandpaper or a wetted reed rush (which accomplishes the same thing with ultra fine sand particles). You can take a Vandoren 3.0 reed and sand it down to 2.75 or so strength. I've personally found that either a doctored Vandoren V-12 3.0 or a good "out of the box" Vandoren V-12 2.5 can do a good job for the altissimo on my soprano clarinet.

I'm curious to see if bass clarinetists use Legere reeds on a regular basis and what their comments would be. After all, you wanted answers for the bass clarinet and not a soprano clarinet.

Hi. I have Legere reeds for bass clarinet too. Usualy I played vandoren 3-1/2. I ordered Legere 4 but still it is after few minutes of playing too soft. So I thing the solution is to by realy one or one and half strenth stronger reeds than you use. Than you will be satisfiet also in high octavs
