Somehow an SML Lemaire (not a King Thing) clarinet found its way to my doorstep. Accompanying it were three mauve/pink plastic boxes of Vandoren reeds (sans barcode). Serial # of the clarinet is 18389.
From past postings I know the reed boxes must be from the [late] seventies. I also know that there is no concise timeline for SML instrument serial numbers.
If that is of any help/hint for someone, you're welcome. I can provide pics (of reed boxes and the clarinet), if someone is interested.
It plays a bit on the sharp side, btw. Is that an attribute of most/all vintage instruments, or am I just lucky?

I have wondered if SML-made clarinets were tuned to 442. They really have never had much of a presence in the American market, so they may not be manufactured to A440.

My SML Marigaux (approx. 1950-something) tunes to A440. Possibly, it's my best instrument.
I have held two SML Marigaux's (no "King" involved here) in my hands. Identical label (or whatever you call the mfr. marking or stamp), but one obviously newer than the other (determined by keywork and bore size). The serial number of the newer Marigaux was lower.
I gave up trying to date them.
If you get an old SML Marigaux clarinet - hold on to it!

Maybe they counted down and stopped production when they reached zero.

I repair clarinets daily, and my daughter plays a King Marigaux. There's an interesting article/interview concerning SML that can be found at...

For a number of years, SML's named their clarinet models after the founders. The Marigaux was the professional model, the Lemaire was the intermediate and the Strasser was the student model. You can find other threads on this model if you run a search on SML or Lemaire.
Best regards,

Vytas Krass has the lowdown on "newer" (post-1950) SMLs.
