The Clarinet BBoard

I have been playing again (after 25 years) since last October. I'm having such a good time. I'm interested in
private lessons at some point, but I'm not sure where or who to look to. I called the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University (Houston) and was told that all the clarinet instructors were booked. The receptionist said that it was against school regulations to give out recommendations, but that I could post my name on a bulletin board. This seems a little casual to me.
I'm just putting out some ideas here: do I call the Houston Symphony and ask? Do I put my name on a Univerisity bulletin board? Do I go to MarsMusic Store and sign up in their learning center? I want someone reputable who is not just trying to earn a few extra bucks (although that may be all it comes down to for any of us doing a job sometimes.)
thanks for reading my ramblings. Michael

Michael,
There are a lot of good clarinet instructors in Houston. What are your interests? That will determine the instructor a lot of times. Call the musicians union local. They have a list of names there that they can give to you. Also, call Bobbi at Band Instrument Exchange (713)523-4289 --closed Mondays. She almost always has a list of reputable instructors available by area. Other sources would the the Univ. of Houston (Jeff Lerner), San Jacinto College (Paul Harris or Chester Rowell). Good Luck.

Thanks for the information, John. Bobbi is so nice. She has fixed up my old Thibouville clarinet and my flute. She is working on an alto clarinet right now for me to rent, so when I go in I'll ask her about tutors. I'll be fifty in 9 years, 3 months, and that is when I want to retire from my
day job (medicine) and pursue music in some way. I better get busy! Michael
