 Where's the heat?
Author: clarinetwife

Hi, all. Our church was bone chilling cold this morning -- the blowers were on full blast, blowing cold air, and the temperature outside was freezing level. I really never play outdoors, so I do not have a plastic clarinet, so I was keeping my horn warm inside my coat today..

I was wondering, has anyone ever been to a gig where the hall, orchestra pit, wherever, was Really cold and there was actually a thermometer around to see how cold it really was indoors? What might be a temperature where you would pull out the plastic horn even inside?

Solution: Agree to raise your Tithe! Heat is getting expensive.

Consider a R-13 greenline clarinet...sound very close to the grenadala wood counterpart without the cracks.

I have a Yamaha 34 that I use for cold gigs. Sometimes there are rehearsal hall situations where the heat hasn't been set properly. For instance, our community band rehearses in a local university band hall. If the students are away for the holidays the computer doesn't turn the heat/ac on and we're either cold or hot. We have to be sure that is taken care of before rehearsal by sending someone to have the maintenance people override the computer. I don't guess your church is doing the same?

Anyway, a cheaper alternative to buying a R-13 greenline (although they are wonderful instruments) is buying an inexpensive wood one (for the tone) for those situations. However, if you're doing many solos you might want to just go ahead and get the greenline.

BobA -- I enjoyed the unexpected angle of your response. You ain't kidding heat is getting expensive. I don't think I want to open my next gas bill since it is going up 27% over last year and last year was plenty [whoa]

Yeah, the greenline would probably be a nice sounding alternative. A Forte would work for most of the situations I face.

A Forte is a good choice. I've highly recommended them to many people and have used one for myself as well. They are an excellent choice for bad weather (or good weather).

Or perhaps an Arioso (of Tom Ridenour).
