Just finished listening to an epic work "Saint Francis of Assisi" by Olivier Messiean.
I was totally blown away by the composer's use of the contrabass clarinet in this opera, has anyone ever heard this work live?
the orchestra is enormous:
1975-83 Saint-François d'Assise - Opera - Choir: s.s.m-s.a.t.t.bar.b.b (15 voices per part) - i.e. chorus of 150 (!!)
Orch: 7.4.8.4; 6.4.3.3; xylo, xylorimba, vibraphone, marimba, glock, 5 perc; 3 ondes martenot; 16.16.14.12.10. (Leduc)
thanks
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Messiaen is great. If you like big scoring, you really MUST check out Walton's 'Belshazzar's Feast'. 1st & 2nd satb + soloists + orchestra + (wait for it!...) brass band!
And I seem to recall there's some nice little bass clarinet bits hiding in there too...
