Help with High D#

I have a song that starts out with a high D# to a C#, etc. Any advice on hitting this note in tune? I'm playing a Selmer Soloist with a B45 mouthpiece and I usually play a Mitchell Lorie #3.

I just don't like the sound of this note. I've tried pulling out the middle and the bell but it still doesn't sound good.

This is an importnat solo for a concert. I'd be willing to rent another clarinet (other than Bb if that would help.

The fingering often shown as "standard" for D#6 (which is what I assume you are asking about):

RT oxx oxo Eb

is out of tune on many clarinets. If that is what you are using, there are some alternates that might be an improvement.

If the passage is slow enough for a smooth shift to C#, try fingering D#:

RT oxx xo,o Eb or

RT oxx oox Eb

If the passage is fast (or as another alternative), try fingering the D#,

RTA oxx oxx

In all these cases, C# would be RT oxx oxx

A very useful D#6 fingering:

R (no thumb) x x x / o x o Ab/Eb

or the slightly sharper version:

R (no thumb) x x x / o o x Ab/Eb

One that I like is RT o x x / x o (sliver) o Ab/Eb (which is fairly standard), but with the left hand first finger down on the lower rim of the hole (half-hole). Good luck.

Um..........

I like D# ALL OPEN (no thumb or register) with just the LH G# key. You can add the two bottom side keys to bring this "up" and since your going to a C#, try playing the C# keeping the side keys, releasing the G# key and adding the thumb and register. Should feel like "fanning a six-shooter."

You can play REALLY fast with these :-)
