I just spotted another clarinet that I'm totaly unfamiliar with. My immediate guess is that its for small skinny fingers (young student). It would also seem to be a real bear to tweek and adjust the keys to correct intonation problems. Anybody out there have any experience with these?

Think about it for just a second...don't alto and bass clarinets have plateau keys? Are they horrible to tweak and play in tune? I think that they have a disadvantage in that one can't "shade" keys for intonation purposes, but they do serve a function for those who can't play the open rings for whatever reason. I've worked on a couple of these instruments in the past and they aren't too bad. They don't play any worse than other student clarinet models (which is what most of them were). I do think that LeBlanc still offers a plateau model in a student line and a pro line. There may be others as well. (I would have to check my references to see if LeBlanc still makes the pro line version).

The pro model plateau is the LeBlanc 1176PS ("LL") series. Key of Bb--14.80mm [.582"}--24 keys--grenadilla--conical pad cups--silver plated keys--inline jump keys.

I played a leblanc student line plateau horn on my last two gigs before my hands completely went south...it was excruciating not being able to half-hole, shade, bonade squeeze effectively....but it was that or not play....

True, I thought of this as I play bass and contra alto most of the time. It just seems to me pad height and fuzziness would be more critical on a plateau equiped soprano in lieu of the open hole set up.

So sorry. I hope you can still play some. I picked up an old plateau model metal clariet (which I have not restored yet) because I know that sooner or later, my fingers won't work right and that will be my best option.
