Hi all,
Can one of the many mouthpiece makers on this board explain to me how a mouthpiece is tweeked, or customized to take a certain reed? We know that certain mouthpieces are meant to take the v12 reed, and some are made to take the FOF etc. What does the mouthpiece maker do to make a mouthpiece / reed combo more compatible? Is it that certain facing curves react better with certain reeds, or does it have more to do with baffle and other internal things?

I can't speak for anyone but myself. What I have done is to develop facings that I know will work with specific brands of reeds. I can't say that it was terribly scientific. In fact, it was done totally emperically, testing reeds against various facings to see what works and what doesn't.
Since I know Vandoren, for example, is NOT going to change for me, I adapted facings until I had mouthpieces that worked with the reeds that most people use, basically the Vandorn V12 3 1/2 and 4.
Without getting very technical, it was a matter of matching the curve of the facing with the resistance curve of the target brand/strength reed, trying to stay as reed-friendly as I possibly could.
In my way of thinking, there is no point in making a "perfect mouthpiece", if you can never find a reed to fit it!

Alter the length of the facing. Some people like the feel of 1mm longer or shorter. Trial and error.

Adjusting the arc of the facing is an art and to expect a technical explanation is perhaps asking the impossible.

Dear RodRubber: For the V12 reed the mpc should have a long facing and the baffle in the tip area should be more shallow than usual to create more airflow pressure to drive the V12 or the similar Marca that I use. Why do people describe my sound as loud or off? It is this same mpc setup. Off for Now, Ken

Bobd,
I have pretty good technical knowledge of the subject. In refacing mouthpieces, I have tried to match particular reeds with mouthpieces. I am just trying to get other peoples ideas so i can try them. Do you have any actual suggestions?

Take a mouthpiece refacing lesson from your nearest mouthpiece technician. That's AFTER you spend 2 to 3 hours reading the old Eric Brand book on mouthpiece refacing.
What you are asking cannot be addressed in a one hundred word bulletin board posting....
It's more like a 10 page chapter in a book.
