 R-13 overhaul....if needed
Author: bryris

I just bought a 1981 buffet R-13. I havent gotten it yet, but it is described as possibly needing some new pads down the road. Does anyone know of a trustworthy shop around central FL that I could have a complete overhaul (pads, corks, key shine, emblem restoration, etc) done on this R-13 if and when I deem neccesary?

Is there anyone on this board or whom someone here knows of that is well recommended to do such a job?

Are you against shipping it out to get overhauled? There are some VERY find technicians that you'd be cutting from the equation if this isn't an option . . .

You could always ship it out to me! I'm rebuilding a 1010 as we speak.

But at today's exchange rate (£-$) that would cost you a fortune.

Emblem restoration only works well if the original emblem is originally stamped deep enough or engraved, this 1010 I'm doing has very little of the logo left on the top joint as it was stamped lightly, but scratching what's still there with a needle point scriber will help the gold paste adhere.

Easier said than done, though.

No, I am not against sending it out at all. I have heard of Thomas Ohme and Peter Spriggs (spelling). Who else is reputable and comes well recommended?

PS...I'd love to have the logo restored too.

You might want to read some of past experiences related by clarinetists about their dealings with Thomas Ohme ...GBK

Search this board (using "search" function at the top of the first message in a thread) for repair/restoration.

There are lots of good repairers/restorers on this board. John Butler has a good reputation. Vytas Krass did a phenomenal job on the clarinet I sent him. Walter Grabner is good. There are many, many others. Shop around!

Think I'll stay clear of Thomas Ohme then. My search revealed nothing but bad experiences.

Here's a few names that I can think of to drop in reference to overhauling or basically 'working' on a clarinet. Feel free to search them as most of them have had TONS of things written about them . . .

Spiegelthal
Brannen - sponsor
Grabner - sponsor
Spriggs - sponsor
John Butler - sponsor

That's what I can think of right now (the think tank is a little low on fuel . . . probably due to the overwhelming cost)

But that might be a start. Read some reviews, contact the ones that you feel fit what you're looking for, and go from there. And by all means, take your time. Unless you have a date to perform coming up soon, there's NO need to rush things.

Also try:

Tim Clark Woodwinds, Worthington OH (very high-end work and at a commensurate price)

Meridian Winds, Haslett MI (good work and very reasonable)
