Just curious, how do you guys acquire that tounging skill on the Mozart concerto? I'm having trouble speed tounging those fast passages. Any suggestions?

Infinite possibilites, but here is one way:

As I've written a few times before -

Langenus - Part Three, exercises #11 and #12 (pages 22,23).

Do both pages every day for a month and you will notice a marked improvement in your speed.

After 6 months, your new, faster tonguing speed will be "locked in".

However, everyone has an inherent finite point of progress. Eventually you will "hit the wall" and not be able to go any faster.

Work hard (every day) to sustain that final speed...GBK

Tongue groups rather than individual notes.

The first published edition of the Mozart Concerto (remember that the manuscript is lost) had almost no slurs. However, the Winterthur Fragment has plenty of them http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Music/Manuscripts/Winterthur/, and it's pretty clear that Mozart didn't expect Stadler to tongue every note. Doing so spoils the performance. Tony Pay tried on his recording, but at least in my opinion, it didn't work.

If you're having trouble with, say sixteenths at 120, you may be anchor tonguing (tucking the tip of your tongue at the bottom of your lower teeth and using the area well back on your tongue to touch the reed). If so, you need to switch to tip-to-tip tonguing. See http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=6899&t=6887.

If you're already tonguing correctly, you probably need to lighten the stroke. See my post at the end of the following string http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=153192&t=153085.

I want to emphasize the fact that few performances tongue every note. My edition has no slurs marked, with the advice to find one's own satisfactory phrasing.

If you listen to a variety of performances, you will note that no two are alike.

Do what you can now, and play it beautifully. Upgrade your phrasing as your skills improve --and as your sense of aesthetics mature.

I prefer more slurs in the mozart, as too much tongue makes it sound "like a barn yard" (thanks to john de lancie)

Since the original clarinet part no longer exists, you can pretty much do whatever you want with articulations. If you listen to most recordings, you'll find that soloists tend to do a lot of slurring.

When I saw this thread, I thought it would be about the Haffner symphony. It has some REALLY fast tonguing!
