 Cheap mouthpiece
Author: Cindy
Date:   2005-08-08 02:39

I am looking for a mouthpiece to march, without drastically changing what I'm used to and not spending a lot of money. This is NOT a question as to whether or not I should march with my original mouthpiece. I am used to playing a Richard Hawkins mouthpiece. So, if anyone knows of a cheap mouthpiece that plays similar to this one, advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

So many instruments to play........so little time to play them!

A Richard Hawkins student mouthpiece would be a good start ...

I have a Hite Premier. I think it cost about $20 and I love it. Other posts on this site have also recommended the Clark Fobes debut. Roughly the same cost, I think.

Thank you for the idea Mark. I looked into the student Hawkins, and found that it costs $75. That's a bit out of my price range, but definitely a good idea, thanks!

I have a Hite Premiere that I like a lot. The Fobes Debut, also affordable, has an excellent reputation.

My Hite Premier plays so much better than a lot of more expensive mpcs. I'd recommend you try one.

Brad Behn (www.behnmouthpieces.com) makes a very nice student-line mouthpiece as well. Very inexpensive, and he puts the facing on by hand. I've put a couple of my students on them and gotten very satisfactory results for a student 'piece. He also offers a lifetime repair/replace warranty as an option if you damage it, and has a tradeup policy if you want to turn it in some time in the future for one of his more advanced mouthpieces.

I strongly prefer the Fobes Debut to the Hite Premiere - both are dirt cheap too.

I got a LaVoz on eBay recently...rather inexpensive. But why don't you want to use your regular mp for marching??

The easiest one to find is the Yamaha plastic mouthpiece, which every music store carries for around $25. Cheap, reliable, easy to play and perfect for marching.

I would also recommend the Hite Premiere as an excellent marching band mouthpiece. They are quite reasonable. Look around on woodwind and brasswind and other music store websites. I think the last one I got was about 23.00 US dollars plus shipping. Sometimes you can find one from a reputable seller on eBay.

I vote for the Fobes Debut. Great players, great price.

I think Ben Redwine at Genussa has a model that might fill the bill as well.

Since you favor your Hawkins, maybe an email to him would provide some sage advise.
