Tomorrow I am purchasing a Buffet E-11 clarinet, which as you may or may not know is made out of grenadilla wood. I have been told that for the break-in period, the first month or so, I should warm up the instrument before I play. How do I do this? That, and any other care-giving advice would be appreciated.

Because the E-11 is wood, and as with all wood instruments, you should warm up your instrument before playing to prevent cracking. To do this, I just hold my hands around it being careful of the keys until I feel that it is warm enough. After it is warm, I start playing slow scales, arpeggios, and the chromatic. I then start practicing solos and everything else. You shouldn't start playing a piece of band music right when you take out a wooden instrument because it can crack.
Maintennance includes swabbing the clarinet everytime you are finished practicing. I also polish the keys once in a while to prevent tarnish.
Have fun with your new Buffet! I have a new R-13 and am loving it!

My local music store is currently loaning me an E-11 for a few weeks. My experience is that you should play the instrument for only a short period of time about five to ten minutes the first day. Then you should extend the play each day by five minutes until the instrument is warmed-up properly. Buffet usually includes a suggested warm-up scedule with the purchase of a new instrument. I think at first Buffet suggests to play no more that 30 minutes. I also agree with holding the instrument before playing.

...and see the helpful instructions on this Web site for warm-up procedures for everyday use. Be sure to follow the suggested initial playing conditions that Buffet suggests so you don't overstress the horn right off the shelf.
After the initial break-in period, a good long tone based warm-up works great for most players.
