clarinet care
Author: doug

I just bought a new Leblanc wooden claarinet and I'm looking for advice on the care of it. I'm told to break it in by playing for only 15 minutes per day for the first week. What should be the schedule after the first week? What about bore oil? I live in New Mexico and it's dry here, how often should it be used? Any advice is appreciated.

Doug,
Taking our advice is probably not the best thing to do! Call Leblanc (or email them) and ask them what to do; after all, they're the ones that'll have to replace it if it breaks - but only if you follow their directions, not ours.

Now, if you had a used clarinet, out of warrantee, then mayby our advice would be meaningfull ...

Why don't manufacturers include care/break-in instructions with their new instruments?

I know the Buffet and Yamaha companies do, but the dealers seem to lose them regularly.

My Buffet bass clarinet didn't. (It did include a fingering chart.) But as you say, maybe the dealer lost it.

I didn't get any care instructions with my Buffet when it was brand new, either. However, by default, I gradually broke in the new Buffet by slowly transitioning to it from an intermediate Yamaha over several months.

Sometimes you get lucky and do things right...
