What are some good colleges that have some kind of performance/music education majors or performance along with another area? The only one I really have heard of is Ithaca in New York which has a performance/music education major in 4.5 years. I will admit that I really don't have any idea of the "big" schools in music. I know that performance is very difficult to get into so I would like to have education as something to fall back on.( maybe more in the midwest US). What are people doing right now that works pretty good in the major area?

I am majoring in music education in Western Connecticut State University. They have a fabulous music program and great professors! You major in either performance or education, or both! Westconn is also very affordable at below $10,000 for the out-of-state student. I can't give you an exact number because I commute and pay only $2,900. It's up to you which school to go to because there are so many great ones out there!
Good luck in your search!

Indiana, U of Michigan, and Michigan State are worth looking into (all have excellent clarinet performance and music ed departments), and are all in the right location for you.

"I know that performance is very difficult to get into so I would like to have education as something to fall back on."
Am I the only one who has a problem with this attitude? If you want to get a degree in performance and get certified to teach because you want to teach, fine. I have found though that the people who "fall back" on music ed tend not to give thier job 100 percent because they're not doing what they want to be doing.

Connecticut College is also very good - it is a private college.

Ya I know that it doesn't sound very good but I love music and anything that has to do with it. I had a band director that was the most amazing man in the world so I would never ever look down on education as what you thought it sounded like. If I did do something like a double major I would put the most effort into both performance and education not just for the safety net of having something to fall back on but for my love of music and for my beloved band director. I give lessons and love teaching and learning from students so I hope what I have said here proves my point and makes up for that statement!!!

This year my college music department has offered us the class Intro to Music Education. The first thing that the professor asked us to ask ourselves was "Why do we want to teach?" If you don't want to teach, then consider a major and a minor, or give yourself time to rethink what you want to do. Teachers that don't like what they're doing make bad teachers. To "fall back" on teaching would mean that you would not necessarily like what you are doing and yourself, along with your students would suffer the consequences of a teacher that wanted to be somewhere other than teaching them. Rethink what you want to do. I am a music education major. Always wanted to be in the Boston Pops. But remember anything can happen!

yeah i know what she means.
I also would love to major in performance, but i know that with all the competition i can't guarantee myself a secure future. I wouldn't consider music eduacation something to fall back on, but as a foundation with the hope to play professionally.
