 Barrels

I own an R13 that provides good intonation for me. However, I played with a guitarist last Sunday for a lenten service. Very meditative music. Unfortunately, I found that, because she is pitched with the other instruments, I just could not push my horn in anymore to get the rise in pitch I needed. It was very close but too much lipping up. I was slightly flat, moreso in the lower clarion range. I am going to have to break down and buy a barrel ever so shorter. And hopefully one that has a comparable bore to the one I own. My sound is fine and I don't want to comprimise.

Any advice? I am going search "barrels" in the data base later. I am not changing mouthpieces. The setup is too good. It IS what I want. Are there others who have two barrels for this very purpose? (And this isn't even Europe)

1. European orchestras tune to A=442 while American orchestras tune to A=440. Buffet make a shorter barrel for the R13 specifically for tuning to this pitch which is 8 cents higher. Is this high enough for you?

2. I've seen an ad for a variable barrel, which you can slide the pitch up and down slightly.

3. If you're playing with a guitar, the guitar should tune to your pitch.

Many of the premium Buffet clarinets come with a second Buffet barrel. For instance, my Festival came with the A 440 barrel and the A 442 barrel. You can order a stock Buffet barrel with the sharper tuning for your R-13 from such places as Woodwind and Brasswind. I see this entry in their catalog every time. I don't know the exact page number from their current catalog, but it's usually right smack in the middle of the clarinet section of the Woodwind catalog.
