 Important Clarinet Sources..
Author: fredackerman

This forum has led me to the likes of John Butler, Clarinet restoration/repair virtuoso, also Greg Smith and his wonderful mouthpieces along with the Doctor's Products, essential quality gear. Doctor Henderson has given all of us an education in keeping our horns healthy. These guys are my all time favorites and remaining loyal to them is effortless.. I'm curious, who are your "go to" people? What impresses me most is not only high quality work & equipment, but approachable people to deal with.

I second all of the above sources.

There are so many "good guys" in the clarinet world that the list could be substantial, but I would also make special mention of the following:

Phil Shapiro (Davie Cane)
Clark Fobes
Ralph Morgan
Gary Van Cott

BTW - Many of the "regulars" who post on the bulletin board are great resources for instruments, accessories, music, recordings and general knowledge ...GBK

I agree with GBK>

One question: do we type all these names in search engines (ex. yahoo or google) and get the sites?

Lucy, When I use Google, I'll type in the persons name and after a million hits come up I'll "search within results" located at the bottom of the Google page, then I put in Clarinet and that narrows the search down usually to the first or second list of hits. Most of the time I find people & companies that way. If you need a specific source, send me a email and maybe I can help you.

Or, in the case of looking for a particular thing like mouthpieces :>), a comprehensive list would result when simply entering into one's particular search engine: clarinet mouthpieces.

As a sponsor of this site, I'm also listed in the column to the right on this page (along with many others), under Mouthpieces and Barrels.

I always highly recommend Clark Fobes as being one of the most best out there. He knows more about the workings of the mouthpiece than most anyone. Where some have good knowledge of facings, Clark has a great understanding of the baffle, bore, chamber and everything else that goes into making a great mouthpiece. He also has great understanding of acoustical principals. Clark is easy to deal with and always is ready to share his knowledge. All of his products, mouthpieces and barrels are top notch.

Walter Grabner is also a very reliable source. Any of his mouthpieces that I have played are fine work. Any colleagues that have used him for equipment rave about his work and professionalism.

VanCott Information Services is a great source for clarinet books and CDs and give great service.

Blayman clarinet stands are the best in the business and I use them constantly.

Morrie Backun for bells and barrels, and repairs (if you can get through the waiting list).

Gilbert's in L.A. for Buffet purchases and repairs.

And, as you mentioned, "The Doctor."
