 Arioso Clarinet vs. Pro Wood
Author: ClariBone

Hello

I read about Tom Ridenours Arioso clarinets and am intrigued. I contacted him with a few questions, and he answered them all and was very polite and honest. I was wondering if anyone on the BBoard has played an Arioso (specifically the ASB-101PL). If so, how does it compare to a pro wood model?? What are the upsides and downsides to the Arioso clarinets?? Thanks in Advance for your thoughts and time!!

Aren't the Arioso clarinets student models? I am wondering. If they are, I would doubt you could compare the Arioso to say an R-13.

I spent some time at Tom's booth at the Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium and play tested an Arioso in Bb and A. Like his TR147, which the Arioso is meant to supersede, the scales were very even and the intonation was excellent. The instruments, like the TR147 are made of hard rubber. My only negative is the keywork, which has been noted for the TR147, is below my expectations. Some of the ergonomics of the TR147 - the register key notably - are not on the Arioso. The price for the Arioso in the upper hundreds and the A slightly above one thousand US dollars. Tom is a legend for his instrument design and has other great products like the ATG system.

But... does the Arioso compare to a professional model clarinet?

You should ask Tom that question. IMHO there are no clarinets that I have found in my travels selling for 1/3 to 1/2 the price of the "Big 4" professional model clarinets that are equivalent.

I believe Tom answered that question on his website. His opinion is biased for obvious reasons. Tom has always been great at marketing. I take it with a grain of salt. The bottom line is that you usually get what you pay for. Live cheap... die cheap! :)
