 some days are great

yesterday i had 2 new toys arrive. first it was a set of speakers, 21yrs old, but a gigantic step up from my yamahas. and then a selmer series 9 and 2x the age of the speakers.

when you pay US$161 for a clarinet on ebay, especially if it is a reputable model, then it doesn't pay to have too many expectations. it had an old crack that had been banded, the amount of plating left on the keys was minimal, there was a fair bit of corrosion on what was left, the wood looked quite dry and the smell wasn't too good. but i've seen worse and it was cheap. very cheap.

so i put it aside and got on with listening to my 'new' speakers. a few hours later i decided to check out the clarinet again - see how it sounded. see if it even played. well it took a while to get everything moving - the keys were gunked up, and the pads weren't new. a few adjustments with the bridge, a few screws tightened, and the sound started coming.

and it wasn't all bad. a few more tweaks, and things were a bit better. a quick wipe over with some bore oil and wood looked reasonably good. and all the time the sound kept warming up, expanding, until i began to enjoy it, and start exploring.

with the stones coming through the speakers, i started jamming along with mick and the boys. they were better than me, but i was having more fun.

sometimes life throws a pleasant surprise our way.

Congrats, b.roke, may I be the first to applaud two V G investments ! Being of a "ripe-old-age", I have done much the same for enjoyment/education. When needing a bit of a lift, I'll play the opening song of OKLAHOMA ! on whatever cl is readily available. In case y'all cant recal it, some of the words are, "Oh What a Beautiful Day" which I also play ?on request? for my retirement "Village" friends. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don
