Whoever can help me:
I'm looking for a clarinet. I would like a good brand, but I don't want to be spending too much money, and I don't want to get something that's going to fall apart as soon as I get it. I need some help on which brands I should be looking at and which brands I shouldn't be looking at. I need something I can practice with and I would also like to be able to take it out and play at gigs. So if you know anything that could help me, PLEASE HELP.

Do you study with a teacher? He or she will have a lot of resources on this topic and will be able to help you find your first good clarinet. I am afraid that the advises that you will receive from this board, although excellent, will likely confuse you more than help you.

The best bargains are used clarinets from reputable technicians. It's worth checking John Butler's inventory of used clarinets. You can be certain they are in great playing condition. Click on the "Service" box to the right, then click on John Butler. At his web site click on "Products". There are others who sometimes advertise in the classifieds here.

www.wwbw.com (Look at all of the clarinets! It's a lustfest!)

Buy from the top 4 (Buffet, Leblanc, Selmer, Yamaha) and get something in your price range. Do you want wood or plastic? I'd recommend wood. (Greenline Buffet if you have outdoor gigs or maybe the Doctors Forte www.doctorsprod.com) Check the reviews on the models and check the BBoard search engine for opinions on each model.

Check the BBoard's used classified ads on the right of this screen --->.
Usually there are good clarinets on there from reputable sellers that frequent the BBoard.

Good luck and get advice from a teacher if you can!

As long as you buy from the top brands like Buffet, Selmer, Leblanc, Yamaha you shoudl be fine, but much more important, if you have a teacher make sure your teacher comes with you to try the clarinets, or if you don't have a teacher, find a decent clarinet player to come with you.
If the best one you try is not that great, don't buy it, you will regret it later. Only buy if you are happy with the clarinet.
