A couple of good things happened a week or so ago.
My best friend plays in the same orchestra as me, and has been playing in ensembles with me for the past 7 1/2 years. So she knows my playing very, very well. (She is a drummer.) She is a person who I can count on for an honest appraisal of my playing (to her, the correct answer to "I sound terrible" is "yes, you do, what the hell is wrong with you tonight?")
So anyway, the other day she said that I was sounding really good and that my playing had improved a LOT in the past year.
The other thing was that for the first time in probably my entire life, I was able to believe that I'd one day be good enough to play professionally.

You are positive with your playing now, and this is a very good thing to be a better player. Seems like you worked very hard, and your friend could find your progress. This is a true friendship.

When things start falling in place it just feels right. Your fellow musicians know it, your audience knows it, and best of all... You know it.

Good friends are priceless... There are a lot of students in our department who say someone sounds great regardless of how they actually sound and that doesn't help! I am eternally grateful for my friends who tell it like it is and are honest when my tone is bad or I rush the fast the passage, or whatever...

Always have a backup plan. That takes some of the pressure off of the career and allows you to focus without being stressed out about getting a job.
