HI! I LOVE THIS SITE! I HAVE BEEN LOOKING EVERYWHERE TO FIND A PLACE I CAN ASK SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CLARINET AND ACTUALLY HAVE A CHANCE OF GETTING AN ANSWER! WELL I HAVE BEEN PLAYING FOR FIVE YEARS NOW AND AM A JUNIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL. I'M TRYING FOR STATE AGAIN THIS YEAR AND AM PLAYING WEBER'S CONCERTINO- I HAVE CHARLES NIEDICH'S RECORDING OF IT ON THE ORPHEUS CD AND FOUND IT GREAT BUT I WAS WONDERING- HOW FAST SHOULD I PLAY THE LAST MOVEMENTS? THE SPEED HE PLAYS WITH FREAKS ME OUT ( WHEN HE CAN TONGUE IT ALL ALSO! ). I WAS ALSO WONDERING IF YOU COULD SUGGEST SOME TONGUING TECHNIQUES WHERE YOU CAN TONGUE FAST BUT YET STAY IN CONTROL. WHAT LIGATURES AND MOUTHPIECES ARE BEST? WHAT COLLEGES DO YOU SUGGEST FOR SOMEONE WHO LOVES THE CLARINET LIKE I DO AND WANTS TO MAJOR IN IT OR MUSIC PERFORMANCE OR SOMETHING IN THAT AREA? THANX!!!!

I think Niedich plays it too fast. Use the tempo marked on your version of the sheet music and the articulation marked on your version of the sheet music.
Experiment a little with tempo to see what you like. I find that to me, it sounds really nice at dotted quarter = 85 beats per minute. Slower and it seems to drag. Faster and it sounds rushed. Now that's me, other people may prefer other tempos.

Nikki - Regarding schools:
First, before you go much farther, think about your goals. Are they to be a music educator? A performer? As a dedicated amateur possibly giving lessons later? Once you've honestly answered these questions we can start to help you narrow down your choices. Some choices need to be made as regards the thrust of the school, financial considerations, whether or not you would enjoy being far from home, that sort of thing.
Wanting to be a performer is a most precarious thing, and you'll have to evaluate realistically your chances of "making it". There's a lot more "performers" graduating from fine schools than the ability to give them all "performance" jobs. I've wrestled with this one personally (as regards my son, who is studying to be a "performer"), but if it's really what's in your heart - work with your parents and go for it. However, having a fallback position would be a "good thing".

I agree that you shouldn't take it too fast or slow. I would take it only as fast as you can play it cleanly. It's a tough piece, esp. the last movement. That may not be as fast as you like, but you can work up to a tempo that is good for you. I played it last year in contest, and I made the unfortunate mistake of taking it too fast for me, and it sounded really bad.
As for a good college, I'm really for Indiana University(but that may be because I'm from Indiana). They have a great music school as a whole, not just in the clarinet department. I have attended their summer clinic (I'm a sophomore in high school) and I think it is a great campus and has excellent staffing. My goal for college is to get into the school of music. I'm not sure whether or not to do performance or music education. I think education because it is probably the most versatile music degree one can get. You can still perform with it, but if things don't work out, you can find another job. I hope this helped you.
